Susan Alderman — Stained glass
|
|
My work with glass springs from a lifelong love of color and light. Glass offers me both color and the wonderful properties of transparency, translucency, and texture. I enjoy playing with how a glass piece can change with different light, strengthening and weakening color and textural contrasts. Ideally, a piece should be beautiful in any sort of light. I take my design inspirations from the physical properties of the glass that I use and from the structural forms, both natural and man-made, that I see in the world. I was originally educated as a scientist: A.B. in Geology, Mount Holyoke College; S.M. in Marine Geology, MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography. Although I have worked as a computer geek, designed computer chips, and volunteered as a zoo aide, I have always had an artistic bent, and I believe that glassworker and artist is the best job description yet. |
