George W. Saulnier — Artistic Recycling Technologies — Glass, Wood, Leather
|
|
Being a lifelong resident of New Bedford and being concerned about the future of our City, State, and Country, my work has moved towards a more Earth Friendly, Sustainable Future in recent years. In America we have become such a Throw-Away Society that it frightens me, which is why A.R.T., Artistic Recycled Technologies was conceived, as well as A.R.M., Artistic Recycled Materials. These two projects work hand in hand and compliment each other, with hopefully the end result being a much more Sustainable Future in this Country, with much less of a Negative Impact than we currently have. No wonder the rest of the World Hates US. I come from a long line of "JUNKIES"; let me qualify this before you think I'm addicted to heroin. My Grandfather was a local Contractor who would basically disassemble houses for the raw materials and rebuild new houses from these materials, my father along with most of my uncles helped in this process. I should perhaps mention my Grandfather on my Dad's side had 21 children. It wasn't till High School that I realized junkie was a negative term. Junkie in my early world meant someone who dealt with junk or salvaged materials. To elaborate on all this besides salvaging buildings, my father and at least four of my uncles owned auto salvage yards, as well as just general recycling. My family has done this since the 1920's; I’ll be the 3rd generation. We've done this long before it was fashionable or necessary. Which brings me to my work and A.R.T. & A.R.M. A.R.T. is a program which uses artists such as myself, who value the artistic recycling of salvaged materials and also the necessity of salvaging our disenfranchised youth. Artists like myself will develop a line of art/prototypes out of primarily salvaged materials; once these prototypes are developed we will find ways to teach/train at-risk youth in the value and use of these materials. The end result being a line of products, made from an almost endless source of raw materials that almost become a metaphor for the throwaway, at-risk youth that will learn and benefit from a program like this. And should this work as well as I think it will, it prevent thousands of tons of "junk" from ending up at the landfill. The before & after chair on this page as well as the additional objects pictured are all made from recycled materials, this program is intended to produce high end objects that you would want to own or have in your studio, home or office, no "ARTSY, CRAFTY", church bazaar, flea market stuff here. |
