Christina Ely — Pottery, Painting, Photography

"If my words seem naïve and impulsive they probably are. Language is often awkward and contrived, and even though it can be honest and accurate, language is only a system of symbols used to express what we are really feeling, making it a diluted form of communication"  —  Dick Erickson

Each aspect of my work reflects a theme related to nature. I create functional and hand-built pottery and enjoy the organic aspect of the clay; the connection to the earth. I enjoy glaze experimentation and seeing how far I can push the clay and the glaze combinations that decorate their surface.

Through the camera lens I bring environmental and man-made elements together to the forefront to create new experiences and ways of seeing. I enjoy being on the water and taking pictures of the sailboats that grace the horizon or being out on a trail or on the beach reflecting everyday life in relaxing spaces.

In the medium of painting my work incorporates various anatomical structures such as the heart, lungs, rib cage, spinal column and vertebrae coexisting with organic forms such as leaves, trees and flowers relating and reflecting the supernatural aspects that partially govern our experience. The inter-relation of the forms creates visual interest and unity in each piece.

I have found the most rewarding aspect of my art to be the nonverbal, unconstrained expression of my personal experience and the delicate relationship between personal and interpersonal experience in conjunction with nature.
